0391 Brompton Road London SW3 1950s

Opened in March 1930, Brompton Road was an example of a prestigous address where Woolworths felt they should have a store (even though it would not be profitable). The image by Terence Donovan and showing a policewoman showing children across the zebra crossing became an icon of the 1950s with Woolies in the background. The store was closed as part of a major trading review in 1970, which sacrificed some iconic but unprofitable locations as well as the second store in some towns to release funds to cover the huge costs of converting to decimal currency in 1971 and to move the remaining 1000 stores to self-service operation.
